History of Lydford

The historic village of Lydford is set in rural surroundings with no street lighting. Lydford village has a 12th century castle and is nearby Lydford Gorge (National Trust), with other historic properties close by. The hidden remains of a bronze age are situated nearby and it is here the royal mint was established during the reign of Ethelred the Unready, producing Lydford Pennies which can be seen in the restaurant area.
